Pompeo made the remarks in a speech on "Unalienable Rights and the Securing of Freedom" in Philadelphia.

"Our own commitment to unalienable rights at home has proved a beacon of hope for men and women abroad pursuing their own liberties," Pompeo told the audience.

The U.S. diplomat also criticised international courts for failing in their duty defend human rights around the world.

"Too many human rights advocacy groups have traded proud principles for partisan politics. And we see multilateral human rights bodies failing us," Pompeo said.
