U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky contributed to her nation's three gold medals when the 19-year-old Washington, D.C.-area native broke her own world record to swim 400-meter freestyle race. Her performance clocked in at 3:56.46, beating the race's second-place competitor by about five seconds.
In the men's 400-meter freestyle, iconic swimming Olympian Michael Phelps took home his 19th gold medal, the Los Angeles Times reported.
And in the 10-meter air rifle competition, Virginia Thrasher, 19, earned a gold medal in her Olympic debut.
