U.S. enters three-way tie for first place at Rio Olympics

The United States was in a three-way tie for top standing with China and Australia at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Monday.

U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky contributed to her nation’s three gold medals when the 19-year-old Washington, D.C.-area native broke her own world record to swim 400-meter freestyle race. Her performance clocked in at 3:56.46, beating the race’s second-place competitor by about five seconds.

In the men’s 400-meter freestyle, iconic swimming Olympian Michael Phelps took home his 19th gold medal, the Los Angeles Times reported.

And in the 10-meter air rifle competition, Virginia Thrasher, 19, earned a gold medal in her Olympic debut.
