The contest was created by the Poetry Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, which are both funders of the NewsHour. This year’s winner, Amber Rose Johnson, is a 17-year-old high school junior from Providence, R.I., who won the final round of competition with her rendition of ‘For My People’ by Margaret Walker.
