Photo by Joel Saget/AFP/Getty Images. * British novelist Beryl Bainbridge, a five-time finalist for the Booker Prize and two-time winner of the Whitbread literary prize, has died at the age of 75. Bainbridge’s literary agency said she died in a London hospital early Friday. She had been suffering from cancer. The Guardian and the Telegraph have appreciations of the author. * More than 60 photographs by Richard Avedon will go on sale this fall in Paris, Christie’s auction house said Friday. The collection is expected to bring $3.7 million to $6 million. New York-based Avedon Foundation is selling photographs from its archive for the first time to establish an endowment to promote the work and legacy of the photographer. * Part two of Susan Stamberg’s series on Claude Monet continues with a look at the artist’s famous paintings of cathedrals. * In time for the July 4 weekend, the Chicago Tribune’s Christopher Borrelli lists his 20 favorite movie explosions.
