Think women in hula skirts in Hawaii, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Tiny Tim’s “Tiptoe Through the Tulips.” But Jake Shimabukuro has been out to change that, and he seems to be leading the most recent ukulele renaissance in pop music. In just the last few years, indie bands and music stars the likes of Eddie Vedder and Beruit have featured the instrument. Ukulele covers of popular songs abound on YouTube, and ukulele clubs and groups have been popping up around the world. Shimabukuro’s latest album is “Peace Love Ukulele,” and he recently stopped by our newsroom to talk about his music.
