It’s still the place for the greatest singers and the biggest spectacles, like the one produced by the small army that filled the stage for a recent performance of “Aida.” But behind the scenes — like everywhere else in the classical music world — there is the looming question of how to keep opera not just alive, but actually thriving. According to a new study by the National Endowment for the Arts, overall opera attendance in the United States is down some 34 percent just in the last six years.
