At a time when the City of New York is proposing big cuts in its operating budget, including for arts and culture programs, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is reporting a major increase in its budget deficeit (now more than $8 million), even after it cut almost 15 percent of its staff last year.

A new J.D. Salinger documentary, in the works for five years, will be unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Meanwhile, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. has already unveiled their hommage to the author — a painting created in 1961 as a cover image for Time Magazine.
The Art Newspaper reports on an agreement last month between government organizations and a Denver-based energy company to preserve and protect the rock art in Utah’s Nine Mile Canyon from increasing development and pollution in the area.
