In this edition of the NewsHour, recovery begins after devastation from the tornado and storm outbreak in the central and southern US, a community in Michigan works to preserve an historic fishing village as climate change increases the threat from rising waters.   1. What are ways outside communities and the government can help those devastated by the Kentucky tornado?
  2. Connections between the tornado and climate change were not made in this story, however, articles asking about the connection are already making the news. What information needs to be true in order for a connection to be made between climate change and the Kentucky tornado?   3. How could you find out if there has been an increase in recent years in extreme weather events (and what types of events) due to climate change as opposed to a fluke of nature? (fluke = something that happens by chance)
Media literacy : Do you know that the term "natural disaster", or an event out of the control of human beings, used to be categorized by the government and businesses (including insurance companies) as an "Act of God, or force majeure ( greater force ) in Latin.
  • Why do you think a natural disaster was labeled an Act of God by these different groups?
  • Why do you think some people and organizations have moved away from using this term? Why do you think insurance companies largely still use "Act of God" when justifying insurance claims?
