EU Faces Ongoing Currency Worries; Obama to Present Medal of Honor

Following Ireland’s refusal of a bailout from the European Central Bank, European Union president Herman Van Rompuy warned of impending crisis if the eurozone nations did not act quickly. Ireland and Portugal have both faced pressure from other nations to address their debt for the sake of the currency.

Medal of Honor to Be Awarded at White House

President Obama will present the Medal of Honor on Tuesday to Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta, the first living recipient of the honor since the Vietnam War. Giunta’s unit was attacked in Afghanistan in 2007, and when fellow soldier Sgt. Josh Brennan was seriously wounded and dragged away by Taliban fighters, Giunta killed one and wounded the other. Brennan, who was shot six times, later died of his wounds.

Rangel Ethics Trial Ends, Panel in Deliberations

Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., is awaiting the decision of eight of his peers after walking out of his trial Monday. If Rangel is found guilty on some or all of the charges, the House Ethics Committee will decide the penalty.

At Least 67 Dead After New Delhi Building Collapse

A landlord faces possible criminal charges after a six-story apartment building collapsed in New Delhi, burying residents in concrete blocks and rubble. The building, which housed many migrant laborers, had also been as a sweatshop. It was reportedly weakened by recent flooding in the area.

Prince William, Kate Middleton to Marry Next Summer

Britain’s heir to the throne, Prince William, will marry longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton next summer. It is expected to be the largest royal wedding since that of his father, Prince Charles, who wed Princess Diana in 1981.
