Chicago Teachers Union Votes to End Strike

Chicago Teachers Union leaders voted Tuesday to end a strike that has closed classrooms for more than a week in the nation’s third-largest school district.

Union President Karen Lewis led the walkout on Sept. 10, a result of a dispute between teachers and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who demanded widespread reform including tying teacher pay to student performance on standardized tests.

After nearly two hours of debate, union delegates voted to resume classes on Wednesday.

Lewis spoke to reporters in a news conference following the decision.
