In rare flip, Shomari Figures wins Alabama’s 2nd district

Shomari Figures won an Alabama congressional seat in a district that was redrawn last year after the Supreme Court weighed in on the key redistricting case.

The nation’s highest court ordered the state to redraw its 2nd Congressional District, which is majority Black, after justices upheld a prior ruling that the Republican-drawn map likely discriminated against Black voters. District residents chose Figures, a Democrat, to represent them.

Figures’ win Tuesday makes state history. Alabama, for the first time, will have two Black members serving in Congress at the same time. Figures will join fellow Democrat Terri Sewell in Alabama’s House delegation.
