The director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency downplayed the effect of Election Day bomb threats and declared the election “free, fair and safe” in a call with reporters. Challenged repeatedly on the scope of the bomb threats — which were reported in dozens of counties across five swing states — CISA Director Jen Easterly emphasized that they had no effect on the vote: “While these were certainly disruptive, they ultimately did not impact citizens’ ability to cast their ballots, or those ballots to be counted as cast.” Easterly also said while the FBI acknowledged the threats arrived from .ru emails, “We don’t know definitively what actor is behind bomb threats. … It has not been established that the bomb hoax attack was necessarily attributed to Russia.” Senior advisor Cait Conley added that CISA and election officials practiced hoax bomb threats during training exercises. Overall, Easterly declared the election “free, fair, and safe,” which she called an assessment of the moment in time.
