A 16-year-old girl has been stabbed to death inside a Connecticut high school and a teenage boy has been taken into custody, the Associated Press reports.
Police say the boy was taken into custody Friday after emergency responders were called to Jonathan Law High School in Milford, Connecticut. His name is being withheld because he is a minor.
Police are investigating whether the girl was stabbed for declining the boy’s invitation to be his prom date.
The victim, Maren Sanchez, a junior, was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after attack, which happened Friday morning, Milford Police Chief Keith Mello told a news conference.
The school, located about 11 miles southwest of New Haven, was on lockdown during the incident.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Elizabeth Feser said Sanchez was an active student.
“She was an athlete, she was in the National Honor Society. She helped out with other athletic teams. She was very well respected and liked,” Feser told the Hartford Courant.
Sean Chester, a student at Jonathan Law, told the newspaper that Sanchez was the class president and part of the Key Club.
