2 bailiffs killed, 1 injured in shooting outside Michigan courthouse

A gunman shot and killed two bailiffs and injured a deputy sheriff outside a Michigan courthouse Monday afternoon, authorities said. The suspect, who has not been identified by police, was also killed.

Around 2:30 p.m. today, police responded to a “disturbance” on the third floor of a Berrien County, Michigan, courthouse, Sheriff Paul Bailey told local television station WSBT. The sheriff did not offer more details about Monday’s shooting.

The wounded deputy sheriff was taken to Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph and is in stable condition.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said on Twitter that the scene was secured and that state police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Chris Gautz, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections, told the Washington Post that none of the probation office’s employees were killed or injured in the shooting, but one person saw the attacker.

“We had a probation officer in the courtroom when it happened, and the gunman ran right past him and the rest of the folks,” he told the Post.

Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow called the shooting “horrible news” on Twitter.

“I am monitoring the situation closely and my heart breaks for everyone affected,” the senator said.

Monday’s shooting follows last week’s shooting in Dallas, where a gunman killed five police officers and wounded several others.
