’60 Minutes’ to conduct internal review following Benghazi report

The news program “60 Minutes” announced Wednesday that it would conduct an internal review of its discredited Oct. 27 report on the 2012 terrorist attacks in Benghazi.

The New York Times said Kevin Tedesco, a spokesman for the CBS program, issued a statement that included no details about what exactly would be the target or targets of the investigation.

“The moment we confirmed there was an issue in our story, we began a journalistic review that is ongoing,” Tedesco said.

A NewsHour segment on Tuesday covered the story, which centered on a description from former security contractor Dylan Davies (under the pseudonym Morgan Jones) who claimed that he was at the U.S. Consulate, fighting the attackers. Within days, The New York Times and The Washington Post published reports that said Davies told his employer and the FBI he, in fact, wasn’t present at the compound the night of the attack.

The program at first defended its report, but apologized on Sunday.

Tedesco’s statement initially responded to a request from McClatchy News Service, which asked about any further action “60 Minutes” planned to take.
