An American teacher was shot and killed by unknown assailants while jogging in Benghazi on Thursday, the Associated Press reports.
The 33-year-old chemistry teacher, identified as Ronnie Smith, worked at the International School in Benghazi for nearly 18 months. The University of Texas at Austin confirmed that Smith was also a former graduate student, earning a master’s degree in chemistry in 2006.
The AP reports that no one has claimed responsibility for Smith’s death, highlighting security concerns in eastern Libya where U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in September 2012. On Twitter, the Libyan Youth Movement, whose members were friends with Smith, extended condolences to his family.
