Kabul, Kandahar Reportedly Hit in Attacks

CNN reports the attacks, launched by the U.S. and Great Britain at about 8:57 p.m. local time (12:27 p.m. EDT), have destroyed the Taliban’s command base at the airport of Kandahar in the south of Afghanistan.

Reuters reports the strikes hit the airport’s command tower, but left the runway undamaged.

The strikes also hit a Kandahar residential area where Osama bin Laden had once lived, according to a report by the Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press.

Both reports said there was no immediate word of casualties.

According to CNN, at least two waves of attacks have struck the southern city — home of Mullah Mohammad Omar, the supreme leader of Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban militia

The network reported the second wave to be heavier than the first and said Omar’s home in Kandahar may have been a target.

Abdul Salam Zaeef, Afghanistan’s ambassador to Pakistan, said earlier today both bin Laden and Omar survived the first wave of attacks.

Meanwhile, CNN has also reported strikes on the city of Jalalabad in the east and the Herat airport in western Afghanistan.

Sites in the Afghani capital of Kabul has also reportedly been targeted. Reuters reports at least four explosions have rocked the area near the Taliban’s Defense Ministry.

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said he would not specify which areas inside Afghanistan were targets. There has been no reported information from officials from the U.S. or Britain confirming where strikes have occurred.
