The legislation responds to 3,000 independent bookstores who say they can’t compete with the cut-price offers. Sponsored by the right-wing UMP party and supported by the left, the bill passed the lower house and is on its way to the Senate. French culture minister Aurélie Filippetti has been critical of the online retailer giant Amazon, accusing them of “tax optimisation” and having a “virtual monopoly.” The BBC writes that France is known to be supportive of local bookstores, which the country considers essential in bringing culture to small villages.
