Capitol Hill police chase ends in gunfire; suspect confirmed dead

UPDATE 6:15 p.m. EDT: D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said in a press conference earlier Thursday that the suspect in the Capitol Hill shooting has died.

The AP is reporting from a source that shots at Capitol were related to the vehicle that tried to ram the barricade at the White House.

A staffer in the House Press Gallery told PBS NewsHour that an announcer from the Capitol Police told people on a loudspeaker if they are outside to “take cover.”

The staffer said the House has gone into recess.

The police issued a statement to CNN saying staffers should “shelter in place” in their own office or the nearest office. The statement said gunshots have been reported on Capitol Hill. It urged staffers to “close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows.”

As we reported Monday there are limited staff and police authorities in place at the Capitol due to the government shutdown.
