The International Day of the Girl Child was founded by the United Nations to recognize girls' rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. For its second observance, This year's 'International Day' theme is "Innovating for Girls' Education."

To mark the day the Brookings Institution lays out some of the progress that's been made toward the education of young women around the globe.

The good news: the number of primary school aged girls out of school has decreased from 58.9 million in 2000 to 30.7 million in 2011. South and West Asia have made very significant gains, reducing the number of out of school girls from 24.2 million in 2000 to 6.6 million in 2011.

Despite progress, there's work still ahead for gender parity in education worldwide, The enrollment of girls in primary schools flat-lined between 2008 and 2011; there are still 4.1 million more girls than boys out of primary school.
