On May 17, 2006, PBS NewsHour science correspondent Miles O’Brien got the chance to fly with his boyhood hero, astronaut and pilot John Glenn, for a story he was working on about the future of aviation. “I decided there was no one better to talk about that than the most famous pilot of our time,” O’Brien recalled. “I tried not to get too nervous about just who my copilot was. That wasn’t easy, but it’s a good thing he was there … to ensure I got to the right runway.” Glenn was 84 at the time, still an active pilot. He said the keys to aviation’s future were education and research. Glenn died Dec. 8 at age 95 in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. We're not going anywhere.
