‘Maltese Falcon’ bird statuette sold for more than $4 million

Updated 6 p.m. EST | We now know how much the “stuff that dreams are made of” costs. According to Bonhams auction house, the ‘Maltese Falcon’ bird statuette sold for more than $4 million, which includes a buyer’s premium.

Let’s talk about the black bird.

The lead statuette featured in the classic 1941 film noir “The Maltese Falcon” is up for auction Monday at Bonhams in New York.

The Associated Press reports that the 45-pound, 12-inch-tall figurine is “one of two known cast lead statuettes made for John Huston’s screen version of the film, but the only one confirmed by Warner Bros. archives as having appeared in the movie, according to Bonhams auction house, which declined to provide a pre-sale estimate.” Bonhams also said the statuette has a bent right tail feather from when actress Lee Patrick dropped the movie prop when attempting to hand it to co-star Humphrey Bogart.

The bird statuette joins other movie memorabilia, including Jack Nicholson’s Joker costume from “Batman,” the 1940 Buick Phaeton convertible from “Casablanca” and other “stuff that dreams are made of” in Monday’s auction.
