The Portland Trailblazers became the first NBA team to take a stance on same-sex marriage when they voiced their support for an initiative to put gay marriage on the November 2014 ballot in Oregon.

"The Portland Trail Blazers are in support of the Freedom to Marry and Religious Protection ballot initiative," the team said in a statement. "We do so as believers in individual choice as a fundamental right of all people."

The Oregonian reports that the group behind the initiative, Oregon United for Marriage, must collect 116,284 registered voter signatures for the initiative to be placed on the ballot. Volunteers and supporters have collected more than 94,000 signatures so far.
