The CIA has been delivering weapons to aid Syrian rebels for the past two weeks, months after the Obama administration first promised aid in June. The Washington Post also noted that there were separate shipments by the State Department of vehicles and other non-lethal gear.
Rebels have not confirmed whether they have received the materials. This marks an escalation of U.S. involvement in the Syrian conflict in recent tensions.
Reuters reported Thursday that the Syrian rebel leadership rejected the Russian arms initiative to put Assad’s chemical weapons under international control.
Salim Idriss, head of the rebel Supreme Military Council, asked the international community to “not be content with withdrawing chemical weapons, which are a criminal instrument, but to hold the prepetrator accountable and prosecute him.”
More than 100,000 people have been reported dead in Syria’s 2 ½-year civil war.
