HOUSE CLEARS $26 BILLION JOBS BILL| Congress made an early return from recess to vote in the jobs bill that is set to save teaching and public service jobs. Democrats claim 300,000 jobs will be saved, but Republicans say the government shouldn’t be spending more than it has.

SEC. GATES PROPOSES MILITARY SPENDING CUTS| Secretary Robert Gates announced a proposed plan of cutting 2800 military and civilian employees. The Pentagon budget has doubled over the past decade due to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Gate’s goal is save $100 billion, but some political leaders are critical including Democratic senators Mark Warner and Jim Webb.
