One-third of Americans reject evolution, poll finds

A Pew Research Center poll released Monday shows one-third of Americans now reject the theory of evolution.

In the telephone survey conducted by the center’s Religion and Public Life Project, 60 percent of respondents said “humans and other living things have evolved over time.” Thirty-three percent said “humans and other living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time.” The poll also found Republicans have grown more skeptical about evolution. Four years ago, 54 percent of Republicans said they believed in evolution. This year, only 43 percent said they did.

Among religious groups, evangelical Protestants rejected evolution the most. And those with more formal formal schooling were more likely to believe that humans and other living things have evolved over time.
