Drawing on Harvard professor Bert Vaux’s 2003 Dialect Survey, The Atlantic called people around the country to hear how they pronounce certain words in the American vernacular whose pronunciation is disputed. They recorded the responses and layered them over North Carolina State University graduate student Joshua Katz’s heat maps of Vaux’s data. A free press is a cornerstone of a healthy democracy.
