‘Pink slime’ goes back to school

The ground beef filler product that came to be known as ‘pink slime’ has returned to schools in the U.S., according to a government report.

The controversial product, officially known in the beef industry as lean, finely textured beef, made waves last year as thousands of schools across the country rushed to remove the item in the wake of critical reports from ABC News.

Tighter school budgets, paired with the lower price point, has seen wider re-adoption of meat that may contain the alternative beef product. According to Politico, orders this year have risen to 2 million pounds between seven states, compared to last year at this time when only three states had placed orders post-controversy.
