Each skipper ranks in the top five on baseball’s all-time wins list. All 16 members of the Hall of Fame’s Expansion Era Committee — a group that includes former players, managers, and executives — named all three men on their ballots. Cox coached for 29 years, leading the Atlanta Braves to five National League titles and a World Series win in 1995. LaRussa managed the Chicago White Sox, Oakland A’s, and St. Louis Cardinals, winning a total of 2,728 games and three World Series. Finally, Torre led the New York Yankees to four World Series wins and six American League pennants. In other baseball news from Monday, former all-star outfielder Magglio Ordonez was elected mayor of the eastern Venezuelan city of Sotillo. Nicolas Maduro, Venezeula’s socialist president, has turned to celebrity candidates to “overcome rising anger with his handling of the economy,” according to the Associated Press.
