Train engineer caught himself nodding off before deadly wreck

The AP reports that rail union leader Anthony Battalico said Tuesday that engineer William Rockefeller caught himself nodding at the controls of the Metro North train that derailed in the Bronx Sunday morning.

Rockefeller has been complying with investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board since the wreck that killed four people and injured dozens.

The NTSB said at a press conference Monday that the Metro North train had been going 82 mph in a 30 mph zone when it jumped the tracks. There has not been a definitive conclusion on whether the crash was to blame on mechanical failure or human error.
