Uggie, dynamic dog star of ‘The Artist,’ dies at age 13

Uggie, the Jack Russell terrier who starred as the lovable sidekick to a fading silent movie star in “The Artist,” was euthanized in Los Angeles on Friday after a battle with prostate cancer, TMZ first reported this week.

His owner, Omar Von Mueller, told TMZ it was a difficult decision but that Uggie had been going downhill for the past few weeks.

Sarah Clifford, his trainer in “The Artist,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2012, reminisced about the four-legged star: “I will forever hold him dearly in my heart and never forget his infinite love for chicken and hotdogs.”

In addition to his role in “The Artist,” Uggie appeared in “Wassup Rockers” in 2005 about a group of skater boys, and “Water for Elephants” in 2011 about a veterinarian who joins a traveling circus.

Although unable to contend for human awards, Uggie received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was popular on the talk show circuit.

His “autobiography” called “Uggie — My Story” was published in 2012.

Uggie appeared on The Ellen Show in 2012 to show some of his tricks, including his skateboarding routine.
