World pays tribute to Nelson Mandela
Tributes to South Africa’s first black president continue, from Harlem to Hollywood and Paris to Beijing. In Johannesburg, South Africans gathered around Mandela’s home to commemorate the leader with songs and prayers. Nelson Mandela will have state burial on Dec. 15, says President Jacob Zuma. His body will lie in state at the government Union Buildings in Pretoria before his burial.
Unemployment at lowest levels in five years
There were 203,000 jobs added to the U.S. economy in November as the unemployment rate fell to 7 percent, the lowest levels in five years.
‘Airpocalypse’ hits Shanghai
Unprecedented air pollution shuts down schools, after the government issued a red alert because the thick smog had created harmful conditions, with pollution as high as 31 times the recommended levels. Reuters reports hundreds of flights were delayed or canceled in Shanghai as a result of the smog.
‘Blockbuster’ winter storm hits mid-section of U.S.
A severe line of ice, snow and freezing temperatures is expected to hit the U.S. Friday, from the Texas-Mexico border to the Ohio Valley. Ice warnings are out for parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. Nearly 1,000 flights have been canceled, as of Friday morning.
