A tragic turn of events the President has dubbed “yet another mass shooting” began in the nation’s capital just before 8:30 a.m. Monday. As of this writing, at least six people have been killed and up to a dozen injured at Washington Navy Yard.
What is this place where the shooting happened? The Washington Navy Yard is mainly an administrative and ceremonial center, and houses the Navy Museum. It dates to the early 1800s, and is the oldest land establishment of the U.S. Navy — itself created a few years prior in 1794.
The complex is in southeast Washington, D.C., along 9th and M streets. It’s less than a mile from the Capitol building and 3.5 miles from the White House. The Yard covers 41 acres and roughly 16,000 employees work within the Navy Yard’s 2.2 million square feet of office space. At its peak around World War II, the Yard consisted of 188 buildings on 126 acres and employed nearly 25,000 people.
