Philippines weather the super typhoon
–The winds of Super Typhoon Haiyan have weakened but the 19-foot waves and 10-plus inches of rain in 12 hours have destroyed many parts of the central Philippines, where more than 700,000 people were evacuated in advance of the storm. The AP reports at least four people have been confirmed dead.

Kerry says no deal has been made yet
Secretary of State John Kerry headed to Geneva to talk with foreign ministers of Iran, Britain, France and Germany and “help narrow the differences in the negotiations” for freezing Iran’s nuclear program. However, the AP reports that Iran and six world powers have not reached any deal yet to end Tehran’s decade-long standoff with the West.

Job numbers for October
Despite a partial government shutdown, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday that 204,000 jobs were added to the U.S. economy in October. The unemployment rate rose to 7.3 percent, which the Labor Department says is most likely because furloughed government workers were counted as unemployed.

Stopping the spread of polio in Syria
The United Nations begins effort to vaccinate more than 20 million children in Syria and neighboring states, after 10 children have been paralyzed by the disease.
