What we’re watching Monday

Good morning. As the shutdown enters its 14th day and many of the country’s schools are observing the federal holiday, these are some of the stories we’re keeping an eye on.

Senate leaders are still searching for a deal on the shutdown as the deadline for the debt ceiling gets closer.
The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science is awarded to three American economists “for showing that asset prices move unpredictably in the short term but with greater predictability over longer periods.”

– At least 89 people died in India while crossing a bridge on foot during a pilgrimage in northern part of the country. This was a day after at least 800,000 people were evacuated from the eastern coast to avoid Cyclone Phailin. At least 23 were killed by the high winds and massive flooding from the storm which at one point had been compared to a Category 5 hurricane..
A series of bombings kill at least 34 in Iraq on Sunday.
Gunmen kidnap a team of seven workers from the International Committee of the Red Cross after stopping their convoy early on Sunday along a roadside in northern Syria. As of Monday morning, four had been released.
