What we’re watching Monday

Good morning. It’s a beautiful fall day in Washington, D.C. Here’s the news we’re watching this morning:

Egypt

Deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi went on trial today, delaring to the judge, “I am Egypt’s legitimate President as several hundred supporters gathered outside. The trial was adjourned until January 8, 2014 due to chanting in the court room. Morsi is charged with murder and inciting violence when his supporters attacked opposition protestors in December, 2012.

Saudi Arabia

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in Riyadh. In a statement, Kerry hailed Saudis as “the senior player” in the Middle East. Kerry is visiting in hopes of bridging differences between Saudi leadership and the U.S. over Syria and Iran. Iran

Thousands marked the 34th anniversary of the storming of the U.S. embassy in Iran. The protest was seen as a challenge to Rouhani’s new softer stance on the U.S.

Voter ID

Wisconsin’s voter identification law goes on trial today.

Gulf Oil Spill Settlement

A Federal judge in New Orleans is hearing a complaint from BP that the spill settlement funds are being abused.
