Hostage crisis continues at Nairobi Westgate Mall

Kenyan military forces are engaged in “sporadic gun battles” with gunmen still holding hostages inside Westgate Mall in Nairobi, the Associated Press said Sunday.

As the terror attack and hostage crisis passed the 24-hour mark, the Foreign Office in London said at least three Britons are confirmed dead and the Élysée Palace said two French citizens were killed.

AFP reports Canadian, Chinese, Indian, South Korean and Ghanaian citizens are also among those confirmed dead at Westgate.

Meanwhile in New York City, NBC New York reports the NYPD has increased security efforts around the city in response to the ongoing terror attack in Kenya.

Though officials said there are no specific threats to the city, Deputy Commissioner John McCarthy said in a statement: “We keep track of events across the globe as they unfold and we adjust our counter terrorism efforts accordingly.”

Pair of suicide bombers hit Pakistan church

As many as 75 may be dead in the “deadliest-ever attack” on Pakistan’s Christian minority, after a pair of suicide bombers detonated their explosives outside a church in northwestern Pakistan.

The AP reports a branch of the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

Colorado highways reopen

Following days of cleanup and repairs, transportation officials began to reopen roads and state highways previously closed by heavy flooding in northern Colorado.

“I think for a lot of people it’s not returning to normal, per se, but it’s starting to get there with some of these roads being reopened,” state Department of Transportation spokeswoman Amy Ford said Saturday.
