Violent Sunday in Iraq and Afghanistan

The AP reports that a new wave of coordinated car bombs hit Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad and a suicide bomber targeted soldiers in the northern city of Mosul on Sunday.

At least 56 are believed dead, according to officials.

In the Mosul attack, a suicide bomber drove a car filled with explosives into a group of soldiers who were sealing off a street — 14 were killed, including five civilians, and at least 30 were wounded, according to a police officer.
And from Kabul, a roadside bomb killed 18 civilians and wounded five traveling on a bus in eastern Afghanistan, according to police sources.

Post analysis finds fraud, embezzlement at some 1,000 non-profits

An in-depth analysis by the Washington Post shows more than 1,000 nonprofit organizations wrote in federal Form 990 disclosure reports that they had found a “‘significant diversion’ of assets, disclosing losses attributed to theft, investment fraud, embezzlement and other unauthorized uses of funds.”

The Post surveyed disclosure reports from 2008 to 2012.

The diversions drained hundreds of millions of dollars from institutions that are underwritten by public donations and government funds. Just 10 of the largest disclosures identified by The Post cited combined losses to nonprofit groups and their affiliates that potentially totaled more than a half-billion dollars.
