It’s day 9 of the shutdown, but we’re open for news at the PBS NewsHour. Here are a few big stories on our radar: New Leadership for the Federal Reserve At 3 p.m. ET today, President Obama will nominate Janet Yellen to lead the Federal Reserve. Yellen, if confimed, will be the first woman to lead the institution. The Shutdown The pain of the shutdown is beginning to spread. The CDC has recalled staff to help fight a salmonella outbreak in 18 states that started back in March. (On another note, the FDA isn’t testing much food during the shutdown.) The markets are hungry for federal data on the economy, but the numbers are not crunching themselves. You can’t price a pork belly without the federal government. Egypt President Obama is set to cut millions in military aid to Egypt. Former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi will have his day in court. His trial for inciting violence against protesters begins November 4. Nobel Prizes Three scientists who developed software to simulate chemical reactions collect the Nobel Prize for chemistry.
