Here are the stories we are following this a.m. It is Election Day for several states in the U.S. New Jersey and Virginia are choosing their governors, New York City and Detroit are voting for mayors. Ballot initiatives are taking center stage in Washington state, where citizens are voting on making food producers label genetically modified foods, and Colorado, where the vote is on taxing marijuana at 25%. On the health care law front, the HealthCare.gov website was reported down again on Monday for about 90 minutes. Medicare chief Marilyn Tavenner will face further questions in front of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee during a hearing at 10 a.m. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in Poland to meet with Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Foreign MInister Radoslaw Sikorski concerning plans for a missile defense system and defense ties between the two countries. Kerry will likely face questions concerning alleged U.S. surveillance of European leaders. A new report from the watchdog arm of the Health and Human Services Department found that 21 states have no annual inspections of child care providers. Only 15 states require background checks considered comprehensive by HHS. The Senate will begin debate on a bill that would ban workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, known as the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
