Multiple reports point to Mike Pence as Donald Trump’s likely VP pick

Indiana Governor Mike Pence rose to the top of months-long speculation about who Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will pick to be his running mate, according to reports from multiple news outlets Thursday.

Media coverage of Trump’s pending announcement about Pence ranged from certainty to “signals” to shying away from the claim altogether. But one thing was certain — there was little talk about any other potential running mate.

CBS News reported that Trump chose Pence as his running mate, citing unnamed sources. It also released poll results that said nearly nine out of 10 Americans said they “are undecided or don’t know enough about” Pence to offer any opinion on him.

The New York Times reported that Trump’s campaign “has signaled strongly to Republicans in Washington that he will pick Mike Pence.”

And the Associated Press simply confirmed what has been reported incrementally for weeks, saying Trump “is on the verge of picking his vice presidential running mate” shortly after noon Thursday.

Meanwhile, MSNBC coverage was more reluctant to peg Pence, but pointed out that Pence’s name was off the 2016 Republican National Convention speaker list: “The full list of speakers, for example, includes Newt Gingrich and Chris Christie, which sure does make it seem as if Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R) will be Trump’s running mate.” But NBC News Political Correspondent Kelly O’Donnell said reports of Pence being Trump’s pick are “premature.”

And Robert Costa on Twitter cautioned the following: “Two senior Trump campaign officials tell @PhilipRucker and me that Trump has NOT yet called Pence or other VP prospects.”

The official announcement is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET Friday ahead of next week’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
