Davis Executed in Ga. After Appeals Fail, Austerity Strikes Hit Greece

Despite highly publicized appeals for clemency, Georgia death row inmate Troy Davis was executed Wednesday night at 11:08 p.m. ET after the Supreme Court denied a last-minute stay of execution. Davis maintained until the end that he was innocent of the 1989 shooting death of off-duty police officer Mark MacPhail.

His execution was delayed by three hours after the Supreme Court’s last-minute deliberations over the case. Hundreds of people gathered at the prison to protest his execution.

Prosecutors maintained their case was sound, but Davis’ conviction was put into doubt after seven out of nine witnesses who testified against him recanted parts of their testimony. Davis had been scheduled for execution on three other occasions.

Davis addressed MacPhail’s family moments before his execution, saying, “I did not personally kill your son, father, brother. All I can ask is that you look deeper into this case so you really can finally see the truth.”

Strike Halts Public Transportation in Greece

A 24-hour strike protesting public sector cuts has grounded transportation in Greece as the government moves to impose the austerity measures required to receive a tranche of 8 billion euros as it works to avoid a default. Other eurozone nations and the International Monetary Fund have constructed a bailout package to help Greece pay down its debt, but the funds have been accompanied by the stipulation that spending be reduced.

Cuts to public sectors have sparked a series of protests in recent months. Despite the outcry, a Greek government spokesman said the austerity programs “sends a message to our partners and to the markets that Greece both wishes and is able to fulfil its commitments and remain at the core of the eurozone and the EU.”

China Angered by U.S.-Taiwan Deal

China’s foreign ministry sharply criticized the Obama administration’s $5.85 billion deal with Taiwan to help boost its fleet of F-16s, saying it will harm relations between the two countries.

“China strongly urges the United States to be fully aware of the high sensitivity and serious harm of the issue, seriously treat the solemn stance of China, honor its commitment and immediately cancel the wrong decision,” Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun told U.S. Ambassador Gary Locke, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.
