WATCH: ‘Every abortion is a tragedy,’ RFK Jr. says

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Wednesday reassured Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., that he would implement President Donald Trump’s policies on abortion if confirmed as health secretary.

“I agree with President Trump that every abortion is a tragedy. I agree with him we cannot be a moral nation if we have 1.2 million abortions a year. I agree with him that the states should control abortion. President Trump has told me that he wants to end late-term abortions, and he wants to protect conscious exemptions and that he wants to end federal funding for abortions here or abroad,” Kennedy told Lankford in a Senate Finance Committee hearing Wednesday.

“I serve at the pleasure of the president. I’m gonna implement his policies,” the nominee added.

Anti-abortion advocates have been concerned about Kennedy’s history of supporting abortion rights. An organization co-founded by former Vice President Mike Pence ran ads opposing Kennedy’s nomination on that basis.

For years, Kennedy, an environmental lawyer, has spread misinformation and falsehoods about vaccines and their safety, including the heavily debunked claim that they cause autism. Kennedy has also promoted drinking raw milk, which the Food and Drug Administration says can pose a “serious health risk.” His views on these issues and others have prompted concern among health experts about his nomination.

Kennedy, the son of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, ran for president as an independent in 2024 before dropping out of the race and endorsing Trump.
