WATCH: Biden hosts nation’s governors at White House during their annual winter meeting

President Joe Biden welcomed governors from around the country to the White House on Friday to discuss his economic agenda.

“Without you none of this works. I mean, really mean it. None of it works,” said Biden.

“We got to get done that we’ve already passed. And not even talking about new legislation, just what has already been passed.”

Joined by Vice President Kamala Harris, the president spoke to the bipartisan group just days after his State of the Union address.

“I believe we can be fiscally responsible without threatening our country or dealing with any chaos,” said Biden.

“I don’t think my colleagues are really serious about it. I hope they’re not, about holding the debt hostage to cuts they want to make and certain things that I may or may not want to make. And we’ve never reneged on our debt.”

This comes as budget negotiations seem stalled between Biden and Republicans.

Biden and Congress need to come up with a plan for raising the nation’s debt limit by a summer deadline.

But it’s unclear what Republicans will demand instead of entitlement cuts as they leverage the upcoming negotiations to extract federal spending reductions.

They say they want to put the government on a path toward a balanced budget, but that’s a daunting if not impossible challenge without painful cuts elsewhere – in defense or other domestic accounts that Washington has been unable to make.

The White House has insisted that Republicans make their budget plans public for Americans to judge for themselves. That hasn’t happened yet.
