WATCH: Biden says ‘Democracy itself is on the ballot’ at DNC event

President Joe Biden is looking to portray November’s midterm elections as a stark contrast between optimism and hope and darkness and fear.

Speaking to the National Education Association Friday, Biden declared, “Democracy itself is on the ballot” in November.

The president’s remarks came shortly after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy laid out the Republican midterm agenda in a speech in Pennsylvania, taking a combative tone against Biden and the Democratic majority in Congress while laying out an litany of Trump-like promises.

President Joe Biden hit back quickly dismissing McCarthy’s agenda as “a thin series of policy goals with little or no detail,” and providing his own details in urging support for Democrats in the midterm elections.

“If Republicans win control of the Congress abortion will be banned,” Biden said. “But if you give me two more Democratic senators in the United States Senate, I promise you, I promise you, we’re going to codify Roe.”

He also criticized other GOP lawmakers for proposals to require reauthorization votes for Social Security and Medicare and opposition to gun control laws and efforts to lower prescription drug costs.

“In just 46 days, democracy will be on the ballot,” Biden declared.
