White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany weighed in on the ongoing unrest in Belarus Monday, saying the United States will “always stand on the side of freedom and democracy.”

“The massive number of Belarusians protesting peacefully makes clear that the government can no longer ignore the people’s call for democracy,” she said during a briefing. “Russia must also respect Belarus’ sovereignty and the right of its people to elect their own leaders freely and fairly.”
Tens of thousands of demonstrators rallied over the weekend in the Belarusian capital of Minsk to begin the fourth week of daily protests demanding that the country’s authoritarian president resign.
The protests began after an Aug. 9 presidential election that protesters say was rigged but that election officials say gave President Alexander Lukashenko a sixth term in office.
McEnany also touched on the ongoing dispute over the sale of TikTok, but would not comment on specifics.
TikTok’s U.S. business appears up for grabs, with the Trump administration trying to force a sale, claiming national-security risks due to its Chinese owner, ByteDance. TikTok denies it is a risk and is suing to stop the administration from a threatened ban.
“We are not going to get in the way of those negotiations by providing comment on this,” McEnany said.
