The White House says President Joe Biden’s role of intense and quiet diplomacy supported conditions that created a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Middle East, cutting short the 11-day war.

“The president set a clear objective from the beginning,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters Friday. Using behind the scenes diplomacy “we could bring an end to the conflict more quickly than it was intended to be,” Psaki said.
Biden spoke from the White House on Thursday shortly before the ceasefire was set to go into effect in Gaza, where Israel has struck hundreds of targets in retaliation for Hamas firing thousands of rockets into its territory.
Biden said the U.S. was committed to helping Israel replenish its supply of interceptor missiles for its Iron Dome protection system and to working with the Palestinian Authority – not Hamas — to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza.
