WATCH: Sen. Slotkin asks Noem to commit to not politicizing issues

Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., asked homeland security secretary nominee Kristi Noem in a confirmation hearing Friday held by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs about her ability to not inflate the politics of an issue to please President-elect Donald Trump.

“I want to hear from you, as an intelligence officer, that you’re going to speak about real threats and not blow something up, politicize something, make something more exciting because that’s maybe what the president wants to hear,” Slotkin said.

“Yes, Senator, I will be as transparent and factual every day, with you and the American people, as possible based on the information that I have,” Noem responded.

Noem, the Republican governor of South Dakota, is a rancher and a former member of Congress. A close ally to Trump, Noem has called migration across the U.S. southern border “an invasion.”

If confirmed, Noem would play a key role in carrying out his promised immigration crackdown by leading the Department of Homeland Security, one of the largest federal agencies.
