The winners of the Peabody Awards will be announced on Thursday, May 1, 2025.
About PBS News Hour’s “War in the Holy Land” Coverage:
Following the October 7, 2023 terror attacks against Israel, the PBS News Hour reported throughout the year on the brutal war between Israel and Hamas; on the enormous suffering of Palestinians under daily, punishing bombardment in Gaza; the Israeli and Lebanese citizens who fled their homes in northern Israel and Southern Lebanon as the war expanded there; and the marking of the first anniversary of the attacks.
Beginning in the Summer of 2024, as low-intensity conflict flared along the border between Israel and Lebanon, PBS News Hour special correspondent Simona Foltyn looked at the groups within Lebanon that oppose and fight Israel and use Lebanon as a safe haven. On the Lebanese side of the border, Foltyn looked at the displacement of villagers by fighting, as the United Nations sought to keep a lid on a growing conflict.
Weeks later, the conflict would explode as the October 7th anniversary approached. PBS News Hour foreign affairs and defense correspondent Nick Schifrin reported from the Israeli side of the border as the fighting expanded and Israel entered Lebanon for the first time in nearly two decades. Hezbollah’s patron in Iran would launch the largest-ever set of airstrikes against Israel as Schifrin reported live from Tel Aviv. PBS News Hour special correspondent Leila Molana-Allen was in Beirut reporting on civilians caught in the crossfire between Hezbollah and Israel as nearly a fourth of the Lebanese population is displaced because of the conflict.
The News Hour marked the one-year anniversary of the attacks in Israel by speaking to a former Hamas hostage, Gazans who have lost their homes and loved ones to this war, and Israelis who lived in one of the kibbutz attacked on October 7th.
